Introduction
Central Police Division is the oldest police division in Singapore, responsible for protecting Singapore's early trade and economy. Its legacy dates back to colonial times and since then, it has always been situated within the hub of Singapore's financial and trade activity.
Over the years, the shape of the Central Business District (CBD) and its adjacent areas underwent drastic changes. The ancient warehouses and go-downs along Boat Quay morphed into discos and pubs. However, juxtaposed with this modern element is some element of old as certain areas still remain as they were, untouched by the ravages of time. Indeed, Central Police Division is a division of contrast where skyscrapers, modern office blocks, five star hotels and luxurious shopping centres exist side by side with lower rise heritage buildings, renovated shophouses and remnants of the old business district that were once demarcated along ethnic lines like Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Little India. There are also key public institutions under the Division's purview. These include the Parliament House, High Courts and Subordinate Courts. We can certainly lay claim to the title of "Busiest land division in Singapore."
Nevertheless, Central Police Division has always coped with the high workload presented by a high transient population, and strives to ensure that law and order prevails in its 'turf'. It also deals with a variety of challenges posed by different communities: Little India in Serangoon Rd; Little Thailand at Golden Mile Complex and Little Myanmar in Peninsular Plaza are busy hubs for foreign workers as well as tourists. Its officers had to be socially attuned and must be able to take stress and think quickly on their feet, in order to ensure the safety and security of the areas under the Division's jurisdiction.
Vision
Our vision is to be the leading police unit in providing world-class public service to our community. We achieve this by investing in our people; instilling a learning culture and developing new methodology; enhancing our facilities; and reaping synergies in close partnership with our community.
Roles and Functions
Over and above the core policing functions of patrol, investigations and community policing, Central Police Division safeguards the commercial buildings that are housed within the CBD. This is critical given the recent terrorist threats and Central Police Division has the vital task of maintaining international investors' confidence by ensuring the safe conduct of normal business operations.
Central Police Division also looks after the Subordinate Courts, Family & Juvenile Courts and High Court and its Courts officers are in charge of ensuring the proper and smooth operation of the judicial system that has won world-wide acclaim.
