Introduction
PID started as the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) within CID on 1st April 1973 to support CID's investigation arms. As it was realised that there was a tremendous amount of valuable information to be reaped from the land divisions, on 2 January 1975, a Divisional Collation Officer (DCO) was recruited into each Land Division.

In October 1988, an Intelligence Division was set up within CID following a revamp of the CIU structure.

On 28th March 1996, the Intelligence Division was upgraded to a full-fledged Department - marking the division's tremendous progress and reflecting its value and contribution in the fight against crime.

More significantly, the event symbolized recognition of the equal role Intelligence plays alongside Investigation and Operations as one of the 3 key pillars of policing towards effective law enforcement.
