Background
The Security Industry Regulatory Department was set up on 1 September 2004 . Since then, SIRD has worked towards enhancing the standards of the security industry by:
- Introducing a rigorous new basic training and testing regime
- Developing a comprehensive set of policies and directives covering APF operations, logistics, manpower and training
- Embarking on a comprehensive auditing regime
Looking towards the Future – Effecting Long Term Change
The security industry has improved by leaps and bounds over the last year as an optimistic wave of change spread throughout the market.
SIRD engineered and drove these changes. Through the Security Industry Forum (SIF), SIRD, together with NTUC, MOM, WDA and the security associations, blazed the trail for the 21,000 guard-strong industry. The image and professionalism of Security Guards has increased significantly, reflected by the increase in the value of security contracts, which led to a generous increase in individual guard wages. This is expected to rise with the introduction of the standardised uniform for unarmed security guards during the recent Security Buyer Awareness Seminar. Together with the introduction of a new grading system and a more comprehensive regulatory framework, the professionalism and standards of the industry will only enjoy growth.
Looking past the horizon, as the status of the industry increases, SIRD will continue to be a beacon for the industry, effecting change and changing lives.
