Road Courtesy Campaign 2006 (RCC 06)
In Conjunction With The 26th Annual Shell Traffic Games (Finals)

Road Courtesy Campaign 2006 in conjunction with The 26th Annual Traffic Games (Finals) was successfully launched on 17 November 2006 at Singapore Expo Hall 3. The theme for Road Courtesy Campaign 2006 is - “Road Courtesy, Pass It On”. The campaign aims to urge road users to exercise tolerance and patience on the roads. It is also intended to remind road users of our national vision of a gracious society - urging motorists to be more conscious of road courtesy. The Guest-of-Honour (GOH) is Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West Community Development Council, Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang and Chairman of Government Parliamentary Committee for Home Affairs and Law.

“Spot the Courteous Motorist” Program

To kick-off the ‘Spot the Courteous Motorists’ programme, Dr Teo had flagged off a fleet of vehicles (10 Comfort and CityCab taxis and a SBS Transit bus) featuring road courtesy messages at the launch.

The “Spot the Courteous Motorists programme” is a 3-month programme conducted from 17 November 2006 to 17 February 2007. Spotters will be appointed to spot drivers who display courteous acts such as signaling early, giving way to other road users and waving to say thanks on the roads. The spotters include the MediaCorp artiste - Ms Michelle Chong, Traffic Police patrol officers, Comfort taxi drivers, Traffic inspectors from SBS Transit, SCDF officers, as well as other appointed sponsors. About 150 courteous motorists will be targeted during this 3-month period.

A driver spotted displaying a courteous act will receive a $20 Shell petrol voucher and 6 bottles of New Moon Chicken Essence. This year, courteous drivers spotted displaying the ‘Road Courtesy Tissue Box’ within their vehicle will win additional Walch hampers worth $20 each.

New Initiative

Traffic Police is partnering SCDF and SBS Transit to introduce two new categories for the “Spot the Courteous Motorists” programme. Motorists will stand to win prizes if they are spotted to be giving way to SCDF emergency vehicles such as SCDF ambulances and fire engines, or giving way to SBS Transit buses exiting from bus bays. The prizes and certificates will be presented to the identified motorists at the prize presentation ceremony.

Outreach Programme for Road Courtesy Campaign 2006 - 2007

Besides leveraging on the 26th Annual Shell Traffic Games (Finals) as a platform to spread the road courtesy message, Traffic Police has also been promoting road courtesy through television commercials featuring our motorist spotter, MediaCorp artiste Ms Michelle Chong. The TV advertisements will be screened over major media stations during the campaign period.

Publicity materials such as T-shirts, tissue boxes and tissue packs have been produced and distributed at the premises of the Shell Traffic Games, Automobile Association of Singapore, Subaru show rooms, VICOM Centres, Driving Centres, Traffic Police Department building and other supporting organisations such as the public transport operators.

Activities at the 26th Annual Shell Traffic Games (Finals)

Traffic Police organized a wide range of activities targeting all categories of road users. Road Safety and Tyre Safety talks were conducted by instructors from the two driving centres - Singapore Safety Driving Centre (SSDC) and Bukit Batok Driving Centre, as well as experts from Bridgestone Tyres Sales Singapore Pte Ltd. There were also road safety talks for senior citizens, where handbags with the road safety message, “Be Seen, Be Safe”, were given out as souvenirs.

Traffic Police also organised a colouring contest for children below 12 years old. Three top prizes and ten consolation prizes were given out for this contest.
