Career in SPF

In the SPF, you would be groomed to be a strategist who will lead your charges an important mission. That means you will get ample opportunities to put your supervisory and management skills to test.

Career Advancement

The SPF. It is like no other career choice you have explored. It’s challenging. Compelling. Critical. Because regardless of where you are in the organisation, the work you perform will have a material impact on the nation’s security and the quality of life of Singapore’s citizens.

As an SPF scholar, we will groom you to be a strategist, leading your charges on an important mission. In upholding the law, maintaining order and keeping the peace in Singapore, you will get ample opportunities to put your supervisory and management skills to test.

Your first assignment

After completing your studies, you will join a class of Senior Officer trainees for 9 months of intensive training at Singapore’s Police Academy. Your classroom hours will be spent studying a wide variety of legal and investigative subjects. The curriculum of the Senior Officers’ Basic Course also includes rigorous training in the use of firearms, physical fitness, defence tactics, as well as practical job-attachments. Several tests will be administered in all of these areas to monitor your progress.

Investigation posting

Upon successful completion of your Academy training, you will be posted to a Police Land Division as an Investigation Officer, spending about 2 years in an operational unit to gain ground experience in various facets of policing. As you learn the ropes, you will be assigned to solve crimes of increasing severity and sensitivity, eventually progressing to become a Senior Investigation Officer. During your tenure with your parent Land Division, you will also have the opportunity to be assigned supervisory responsibilities in major police operations and events.

Staff posting

After your initial posting as an Investigator, you will be handed the role of a Staff Officer in one of the many staff departments or line units within the SPF. In the year or two that follows, you will play a critical role in initiating, planning, policy formation and facilitating changes which enhance the operational effectiveness of the SPF. You will work in close partnership with other departments both within and outside the SPF, co-creating strategies to ensure the SPF’s continued success in the future. You will also receive special assignments to keep you in contact with officers performing regular policing duties.

Command posting

Having gained the relevant experience and exposure from your foundation and staff postings, you will be handed a Command Position in one of the SPF’s line units. As the Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) Team Leader or NPC Commanding Officer or the Head of Operations of a Police Land Division, you will have the opportunity to develop and hone your management and supervisory abilities. You will be assigned the command and control of a group of officers, and be directly responsible for managing and motivating them to achieve departmental and organisational objectives.

Beyond

As your career progresses, you can expect to be exposed to a wide variety of departments and units within the SPF, MHQ and other HT departments, where your responsibilities and supervisory functions will increase in succession. If you are a SPF Overseas Scholar, you will have the opportunity to be placed under the Public Service Commission’s Management Associates Programme, where you will have the opportunity to be seconded to other Ministries. Your career in the SPF will be closely monitored and you will be assessed on your suitability for assuming Senior Management positions in the SPF, as well as directorial positions within the Home Affairs Ministry and other departments in the Civil Service.

Management Associates Programme

All SPF (O) Scholars will be placed under the PSC Management Associates Programme where our scholars can be posted outside the Police Force for exposure.
