Amendment Notification (for Overwidth Permits)

Once the overwidth permits have been approved and endorsed it may not be amended unless a written permission using the Amendment Notification form is submitted. The request will be processed based on the need or requirement of the applicant to change the following:

  1. Date of escort;
  2. Time of escort;
  3. Width declaration;
  4. Vehicle number; and
  5. Routes.

This request will be approved on case by case basis. In the event where the requests do not meet the requirements it may be rejected.

Application Procedure

Applicants who wish to make amendments shall submit their request through fax to the Operations and Training Branch of Traffic Police. The application shall be processed by the Assistant Operations Officers on duty. The amendment notification form shall be duly completed and faxed to:

The processing period will take at least 1 working day commencing from the date it was received. This shall apply to Malaysian vehicles as well. Applicants are advised to provide their fax number to facilitate this process. Issuing of approved amendments will be done from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).

Authorisation to use Expressway

Under Rule 11 of the Road Traffic (Expressway Traffic) Rules vehicles mentioned in the excluded category are not permitted to travel along the expressway. However subjected to conditions excluded vehicles may request to travel along the expressways due to the following reasons:

  1. Maintenance, repair, improvement, cleaning or clearance of any part of the expressway.
  2. Erection, laying, maintenance, alteration or removal of any structure, works, apparatus or any other thing in, on, under or over any part of the expressway.

An authorisation may be granted to excluded vehicles for the purpose of enabling the vehicle to cross an expressway or to secure access to any premises abutting on or adjacent to the expressway. This is subjected to the following conditions requirements:

  1. Any part thereof as an alternative road for the period during which the use of the road by the vehicle continues to be impossible or unsuitable.
  2. The relaxation any prohibition or restriction imposed by these Rules in so far which Traffic Police considers it necessary to do so in connection with the use of the expressway or any part thereof by any excluded vehicle in pursuance of any authorisation under Rule 11 (4).

List of excluded vehicles:

  1. bicycles;
  2. tricycles;
  3. trishaws;
  4. motor-cycles with side cars attached;
  5. invalid carriages;
  6. three-wheeled vans;
  7. low trailers;
  8. road rollers;
  9. ready-mix concrete trucks;
  10. mobile cranes;
  11. forklifts;
  12. excavators;
  13. road pavers;
  14. tractors;
  15. dumpers;
  16. wheel loaders;
  17. bulldozers;
  18. graders;
  19. mobile concrete pumps;
  20. hydrant dispensers;
  21. motor vehicles with any of the wheels fitted with neither a pneumatic tyre nor a solid rubber tyre; and
  22. any other motor vehicle where the maximum speed at which it may be driven on any road under the Road Traffic (Regulation of Speed) Rules is 40 kilometres per hour.

Applicants with excluded vehicles indenting to travel along the expressways are required to submit their application to the Operations and Training Branch of Traffic Police. The application shall be processed by the Assistant Operations Officers on duty. The application form shall be duly completed and all applications may be submitted through fax or by mail at the following address:

Overwidth Permit

Under Rule 16 of the Road Traffic Rules vehicles conveying over width loads which exceeds 2.6 metres will require permission to travel on public roads. Police may permit vehicles conveying load exceeding the requirements specified in Rule 15 of the Road Traffic Rules.

The overall width of such vehicle shall be the distance between the width of the load or vehicle. However this requirement shall exempt vehicles used by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore for the following purpose:

  1. Preserving life and property in case of fire;
  2. Aiding or rescuing persons in danger; or
  3. Conducting any simulation exercise.

Rule 16 also provides for certain conditions to be imposed in relation to:

  1. Any vehicle the overall width of which exceeds 2.6 metres to be used on a road; or
  2. Any load or covering placed over a load on any vehicle to use on a road to exceed the requirements specified in Rule 15;

Overwidth vehicles or vehicles conveying overwidth loads exceeding 3.0 metres will require an Auxiliary Police. If the overwidth measurement is between 2.6 metres and 3.0 metres no escort is required. A permit will still be required but it will be a term basis. Subjected to the following conditions TP may approve the permits in relation to:

  1. the lateral projection of any load carried by the vehicle;
  2. the overall height of the vehicle;
  3. the need for police or other escort to be provided for the transport of the load;
  4. the hours and route of travel of the vehicle; and

any other safety measures to be taken.
