Apples For $40,000, Six Nabbed For Scams 

Police have busted a group of apple scam tricksters who are believed to be involved in at least three cases of cheating, involving jewellery and cash of more than $40,000, which were reported in the last three days. The three men and three women, aged between 26 and 52, are Chinese nationals. They were arrested earlier this afternoon in Bencoolen Street

Between 16 and 17 March, Police received reports from three elderly female victims about being conned by three Chinese women who convinced them that they were being possessed by evil spirits. The three suspects had asked the victims to offer their money and jewellery so that the suspects could help conduct prayers to avert disasters that may otherwise befall the victims. The victims' money and jewellery were wrapped in newspaper during the prayer sessions. After the prayer sessions, the newspaper bundles were returned to the unsuspecting victims who were told not to open them until they reached home. On reaching home, the victims discovered that their valuables had been replaced with apples.

On noticing the similarities of in the way the scams were carried out, Police conducted intensive enquiries. At about 4 pm today, an operation was mounted and the suspects were arrest at a hotel in Bencoolen Street . More than 30 pieces of jewellery and cash amounting to more than S$10 000/- were seized from their hotel room.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Supt Jessica Kwok, commended all officers involved for a well-coordinated effort and excellent teamwork leading to the quick arrests and recovery of a substantial amount of stolen goods valued at market price in excess of $40,000/-.

The suspects will be charged in Court tomorrow for Cheating read with Common Intention which carries on conviction a maximum jail term of 7 years and a fine.
