It is every bicycle owner’s responsibility to ensure his bicycle is properly secured to prevent it from being a target of theft. Bicycle owners are encouraged to adopt the following measures to safeguard their bicycles:
Keep the bicycle at home if not in use;
The bicycle should always be locked when left unattended, even if it is for a short while;
Lock the bicycle to a fixed permanent structure e.g. on a bicycle rack that is anchored to the ground or wall. Always secure the bicycle components and accessories, especially those which are easily removable;
Use a durable lock made from 100% hardened steel. As an added enhancement, one can secure the bicycle with a U-lock, which provides better security compared to cable locks; (U-lock)
Park the bicycle at places which are well-lit and where human traffic is heavy or frequent; and
Make permanent identification marks on the bicycle e.g. engrave your name on the bicycle frame, as well as to keep records of the bicycle, such as the purchase receipt or photos of the bicycle. This will enable Police to facilitate recovery of the bicycle if it is stolen.
If you have notice any suspicious characters loitering in the vicinity or meddling with a secured bicycle, please call the Police hotline at 1800 – 255 0000 or ‘999’ if urgent Police assistance is required.
