Vigilant Officers Nab Loanshark Runners with Controlled Drugs
 

Two men aged 28 and 30 were arrested by Police early this morning for suspected involvement in loansharking activities as well as suspected drug consumption after they were found with loansharking paraphernalia and what is believed to be controlled drugs, in their possession.

On 29 Jan 2010 at about 2.30am , Police received information that a HDB unit at Bukit Purmei Road had been splashed with paint. Officers from Central Police Division attended the incident and patrols were stepped up in the vicinity of Bukit Purmei Road . The officers who were patrolling spotted a saloon car with two men driving along Kampong Bahru Road and decided to check on them. Four cans of paint, a bottle of thinner, a permanent marker, an ATM card, receipts of bank transactions, suspected debtors' records, and some substances believed to be controlled drugs were found in the vehicle and the 2 suspects' possession. The 2 suspects were subsequently placed under arrest for suspected involvement in loansharking activities and consumption of controlled drugs.

Investigations are ongoing.

Persons found guilty of operating or assisting in the operating of a loansharking business may be fined not less than $20,000 and up to $200,000 or imprisoned for up to two years or both. Under the Misuse Drugs, persons found guilty for possession and consumption of controlled drugs may be imprisoned for up to 10 years or fined up to $20,000 or both.

Commander of Central Police Division HQ, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Lau Peet Meng, commended his officers for their vigilance which resulted in the swift arrests of the suspects.
