Police have arrested 3 men and 3 women, aged between 40 to 59 years of age, for peddling counterfeit apparel and sportswear goods. The six are believed to be part of two major local syndicates involved in dealing in such counterfeit goods.
Following extensive enquiries and probes, police embarked on an 18-hour operation which started from yesterday to early this morning, raiding four makeshift trade fair stalls and a repository within the Bedok area. Items seized included over 40,000 items of clothing, consisting of soccer jerseys bearing the trade marks of popular football clubs and children’s apparel printed with popular cartoon characters. The items seized had an estimated street value of $1.08 million. Investigations are still ongoing.
Assistant Director of the Specialised Crime Division, Criminal Investigation Department, SUPT Goh Lam Kiong, commended the officers for their good work in eradicating the syndicates and said, “Police will continue to take enforcement action against these pirates who profit at the expense of legitimate business and consumers.”
Persons found in possession of infringing goods for the purposes of trade or manufacture in which a registered trade mark is falsely applied may be fined up to $10,000 per article - up to a maximum $100,000 for all items, or imprisoned for up to 5 years or both.
