Objectives of Singapore Road Safety Council
The objectives of the SRSC are as follows:
- Foster closer cooperation among local authorities and agencies for a holistic approach in all road accident prevention activities, particularly through campaigns, training and public education;
- Serve as the official body for Singapore to engage with other international road safety councils and programmes in contribution to global road safety outcomes; and
- Serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas on matters pertaining to road safety.
In carrying out these roles, the Council may form committees and co-opt members into these committees. The members can come from the relevant government agencies and industry players to look into road safety issues and carry out initiatives of the Council.
The Council shall be a non-profit making organisation with its own constitution to govern its existence. It is also committed to promoting public awareness of road safety and the concept of personal responsibility in matters of road safety. The Council will be self-funded through sponsorships and donations, and is registered as an official entity with the Registry of Societies (ROS). The Council is also granted ‘Charity’ and ‘Institutions of Public Character (IPC)’ status for purposes of managing the sponsorship funds and donations. A Secretariat will also be housed within the Traffic Police Department to support the Council in its day-to-day operations.
Way Forward
The changing landscape of traffic safety in Singapore warrants a more holistic approach to promote the call for greater road safety awareness amongst the motoring public.
The timely establishment of SRSC will provide local authorities with a dedicated platform to look at all such related road safety issues and will certainly prove to be much more efficient in advancing the cause for safer roads.
