Vigilant Officers Arrest Another Debtor-Turned-Runner
Police arrested a 29-year-old man yesterday evening for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.
On 8 February 2010 at about 8.30 pm , while conducting anti-crime rounds, officers from Clementi Police Division spotted a man loitering suspiciously at an ATM machine in the Clementi Ave 3 housing estate area. Officers then conducted a check on the man and found several ATM cards and bank transaction receipts in his possession. The suspect was placed under arrest for suspected involvement in loansharking activities. Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect was a debtor himself and was believed to have assisted the loansharks by collecting debt repayments. Investigations are on-going.
First-time offenders found guilty of assisting in the business of an unlicensed moneylender may be fined up to $200,000 or imprisoned up to two years or both.
Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner (DAC) of Police Ng Yeow Boon commended his officers for their vigilance which resulted in the successful arrest of the suspect.
