Kreta Ayer – Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee is organising the Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2010. To mark the celebration of Chinese New Year 2010, there will be a Countdown Celebration on 13 Feb 2010 along Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road.
Large crowds and heavy vehicular traffic are expected around Chinatown. The public is advised to note the following arrangements for the event.
Safety and Security Arrangements
Members of the public are advised to look after their belongings, especially in crowded places. For security and safety reasons, bags and personal items may be subjected to checks by police officers. Members of the public are advised to co-operate with the Police and Auxiliary Police Officers should checks be conducted. They should also notify the Police of any suspicious items or persons by calling ‘999’.
For safety reasons, Auxiliary Police Officers and marshals will be regulating the number of persons allowed into Pagoda St via Chinatown North-east Line (NEL) Station exit A. In the event of congestion, members of public will be directed to leave the station via alternative exits in the direction of People’s Park Complex, People’s Park Centre and Chinatown Point.
Due to the anticipated large crowd, dispersal is expected to be slow after the event. Members of public are advised to be patient, and to co-operate with and follow the instructions of the Police and Auxiliary Police Officers. Crowd control barricades and directional signs will be in place to facilitate safe and orderly crowd dispersal.
Members of public are also advised to be prepared for wet weather.
Traffic Arrangements
To facilitate the set up of the event, the following roads/lanes will be closed to vehicular traffic:

During the road closure period, Mosque Street will be converted into a two way street to facilitate the movement of vehicular traffic along South Bridge Road .
During the road closure, access to the above-mentioned roads will only be granted to police and emergency vehicles. Auxiliary police officers will be deployed at all affected road junctions to assist motorists and regulate traffic.
Parking restrictions along the peripheral roads will be strictly enforced. Vehicles found parking and causing obstruction will be towed away.
Transportation
Taken into consideration on the high demand of public transportation during the festivity, SBS Transit in collaboration with SMRT will be extending several bus and train operating services. Members of public may contact SBS Transit at 1800-2872727 and SMRT at 1800-3368900 for further information on the extension of services.
As heavy congestion is expected at Chinatown NEL station, the public is advised to use Outram Park MRT and Clarke Quay NEL stations.
Drivers can tune in to the radio or look out for updates on the traffic situation via EMAS advisory notices.
Some delays are to be expected and the understanding of the public is much appreciated.
