Vigilant Officers Nab Two Loanshark Runners At Road Block
Police arrested two men, aged 27 and 30 years, for their suspected involvement in loanshark harassment during a road block early this morning.
On 24 February 2010 at about 3.20am, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division stopped a car during a Police road-block in the vicinity of Hougang Ave 8. The alert officers observed that the two men in the car appeared to be behaving in a suspicious manner and decided to conduct a check on them. A search uncovered an assortment of paint in various containers, crayon, and documents believed to be that of debtors’ records. The mentioned items, as well as handphones and SIM cards found in their possession, were seized for further investigations. The two men were placed under arrest for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment activities.
The two men will be charged in Court on 25 February 2010 for loanshark harassment under the Moneylenders' Act 2008.
Under the amended Moneylenders Act 2008 which came into effect on 11 February 2010 , first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall face imprisonment term of up to 5 years and may be liable to a fine between $5,000 and up to $50,000. In addition, mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes shall be imposed on the offenders convicted of loanshark harassment.
