Police have arrested a 52 year-old man who is suspected to be involved in at least 3 cases of taxi robberies in the Tampines housing estate.
Since August 2009, Police received reports of taxi robberies that took place in the Tampines housing estate. The suspect would board the taxi and direct the taxi driver to Tampines. Upon arriving at the destination, the suspect, who would be seated behind, will place a knife at the taxi driver's neck and demand for the cash and personal belongings.
Through extensive follow-up investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division managed to establish the suspect’s identity. On 3 Mar 2010 at about 6.15 am, the suspect was arrested in the vicinity of Blk 23 Chai Chee Rd.
The suspect will be charged on 4 March 2010 for Armed Robbery under Section 392 read with Section 397 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 14 years and shall be liable for a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
Commander of Bedok Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police, Teo Chun Ching, commended his officers for their resourcefulness and teamwork which led to the arrest of the suspect.
