Police have arrested a 44-year-old female Chinese National for overstaying and attempting to bribe six police officers on 6 March 2010.

On 6 March 2010 at about 6pm, officers from Rochor NPC were conducting anti-crime patrols in the vicinity of King George’s Avenue when they spotted a woman behaving suspiciously at the junction of King George’s Avenue and Horne Road. The officers conducted a check on her and found that her social visit pass had expired. As the officers were about to arrest the woman, she offered them the money she had on hand in return for her release. The officers rejected her offer without hesitation and warned her against attempting to bribe them.

The woman was undeterred and proceeded to ask the officers for their contact details, offering to meet up with them at a later date to give them more money, if they would let her off. However, the officers held true to their office and did not succumb to the woman's bribes. The woman was arrested for overstaying and attempted bribery.

The woman will be charged in court on 8 Mar 2010 for an offence of Unlawful Presence in Singapore (Overstaying) under Section 15(3)(a) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 133. If convicted, she will be imprisoned for not more than 6 months and/or fined up to $4000. The woman has also been referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigations Bureau for further investigations in relation to her attempt to bribe the police officers.

The six officers, consisting of Corporals Tham Kok Leong, Tan Qin Yong, Jason Ang Seng Hong, Balaguru S/O Manogaran, Shahrizal Shafiee and Sergeant Prithpal Singh, were commended by DAC Lau Peet Meng, Commander of Central Police Division, for their integrity in turning down the bribe. He added "We have zero tolerance for corruption in the Force and I'm proud of my officers who upheld the law and conducted themselves with integrity.”
