Man to be Charged for Disposing off Stolen Bicycles

Police have arrested a 52-year-old man for assisting to dispose off bicycles stolen from various locations in the Hougang, Serangoon and Sengkang housing estates.

On 6 April 2010 at about 9.15am, following investigations into a spate of bicycle thefts in the Hougang, Serangoon and Sengkang housing estates, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division conducted an operation and arrested the 52-year-old suspect in the vicinity of Bugis MRT station. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was believed to be responsible for at least 60 cases of assisting to dispose off stolen bicycles. A lorry with six bicycles was also seized for investigations.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 8 April 2010 for Assisting in the Disposal of Stolen Property under Section 414 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The offence carries a penalty of a maximum jail term of up to 5 years or with fine or with both.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, DAC Hsu Sin Yun commended his officers for their efforts in tracking down the suspect. He also advised bicycle owners to always lock their bicycles and use a good locking device to secure their bicycles. Bicycle owners should also make permanent identification marks on the bicycle frame/wheels to make it difficult for the thief to dispose off the bicycle and facilitate recovery if it is reported stolen.
