In a 14-hour operation conducted on 14 April 2010 , Police arrested five men, aged between 25 to 53 years, for possession of counterfeit music CDs for the purpose of trade .
Following extensive intelligence probes into the distribution of pirated music CDs, officers from the Intellectual Property Rights Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department mounted simultaneous raids at retail shops and a warehouse in the Chinatown , Clementi, Toa Payoh and Kaki Bukit areas. More than 3,000 jackets of counterfeit music CDs with an estimated street value of $48,000 were seized. The Recording Industry Singapore (RIS) and various property rights owners of record companies are also assisting the Police in investigations.
Assistant Director of the Specialised Crime Division, Criminal Investigation Department, Superintendent of Police Goh Lam Kiong said, “Police will continue to take strict enforcement action against these pirates who profit at the expense of legitimate businesses and consumers.”
Investigations against the arrested persons are on-going.
Any persons found guilty of selling or distributing infringing articles of any work in which copyright subsists in the work, are liable to a fine not exceeding $10,000 per article, and up to a maximum fine of $100,000, or imprisonment for up to five years or to both.
