Following a 13-hour operation at Sim Lim Square on 23 April 2010, Police arrested 10 men and four women aged between 21 to 34 years old for their involvement in the distribution of pirated movies and counterfeit mobile phones.

In the course of the operation which commenced on the morning of 23 April, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department mounted simultaneous raids at nine locations in Sim Lim Square including retail shops and mobile kiosks. Items seized for further investigations included media players and hard-disks loaded with pirated movies as well as trade mark infringing mobile phones with an estimated street value of $160,000. Preliminary investigations indicated that the seized items were supplied from overseas. Investigations are still on-going.

Assistant Director of the Specialised Crime Division, Criminal Investigation Department, Superintendent of Police Goh Lam Kiong commended his officers and said, “Any copyright or trademark infringer, who profits at the expense of legitimate business and consumers with a blatant disregard for intellectual property rights laws, will have to face legal penalties”.

Persons found guilty of selling or distributing infringing articles of any work in which copyright or trademark subsists, may be find up to $10,000 per article - up to a maximum $100,000 for all items, or imprisoned for up to 5 years or both.
