As part of a series of islandwide operations which started in Jan 2010, another 3-day joint-enforcement operation led by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has resulted in a total of 46 men and 107 women being arrested for various offences.
The extensive operation was conducted from 7 to 9 May 2010 and saw the involvement of more than 200 officers from the Singapore Police Force, the Central Narcotics Bureau, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority and the Singapore Customs. The arrests were made at various locations in Balestier, Sembawang, Geylang, Joo Chiat, Orchard Road and Selegie, including entertainment outlets, massage centres, hotels, back lanes and lodging houses. Public entertainment and hotel licensing breaches were also detected during the operations and the licensees will be taken to task separately.
The 153 persons were arrested for various criminal offences such as gang-related activities, immigration offences, peddling of contraband cigarettes and vice-related activities.
Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Ng Boon Gay commended the officers for their efforts and thanked the various enforcement agencies for their support. He added, “Decisive enforcement action is necessary to ensure that we keep the pressure up against criminal elements and send a clear signal that we will not tolerate their likes in Singapore. As I have said before, there is no safe haven for criminals and we will continue with such operations to keep illicit activities at bay. ”
Investigations against those arrested are ongoing.
