Crime Prevention Advisory: Great Singapore Sale 2010

Police would like to remind the public to be extra vigilant with their belongings, especially when out shopping during the coming Great Singapore Sale which will be held from 28 May to 25 July 2010. During this shopping season, large crowds are expected to throng shopping outlets and thieves may seize the opportunity to commit crimes during this period.

Common methods adopted by thieves include stealing exposed items such as handphones and wallets from bags and unzipping or slitting the bags of unsuspecting victims. Accomplices have also been known to screen or block the view of other members of public to facilitate the theft. Some may deliberately bump or jostle into an unsuspecting person in a crowd as a means of distraction before committing the crime.

Police would like to remind the public to remain vigilant and alert at all times. While Police will be stepping up patrols during this period, members of the public are advised to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  1. Do not be distracted by strangers creating a commotion, bumping into you or accidentally spilling something onto you. Check your valuables immediately if this happen.
  2. Avoid exposing cash, valuables, or jewellery in public areas as this might draw unnecessary attention;
  3. Ensure that your bag is properly secured at all times. Cross sling it in front or clasp it firmly while shopping or walking;
  4. Never leave your valuables unattended on trolleys or strollers while shopping. Valuables unattended pose as easy targets to would-be culprits.
  5. While having meals, never use valuables such as handphones to reserve seats. Arrange for a friend or colleague to look after your valuables while ordering food.

Members of the public who encounter a crime or come across any suspicious person(s) can contact the Police for assistance.
