Police have arrested a 50-year-old man who is believed to be involved in a series of taxi robberies islandwide.
From 27 May 2010 to 1 Jun 2010, Police received several reports of taxi robberies committed by an unknown male suspect in various areas islandwide such as Marsiling, Ang Mo Kio, University Road , Tagore Lane and Bishan. In all these cases, the suspect had placed a knife at the taxi driver's neck and demanded for cash to be handed over upon arrival at his destination. In two of the cases, the suspect had also instructed the victims to surrender their vehicle ignition keys to prevent them from pursuing him.
Following extensive investigations, officers from Jurong Police Division managed to establish the suspect’s identity. On 4 Jun 2010 at about 7.30 am , the Police arrested the suspect at his residence at Blk 15 Marsiling Road. Various items such as clothings, an umbrella, a haversack and a pair of slippers which are believed to be related to the commission of the robberies were also seized as evidence.
The suspect will be charged on 5 Jun 2010 for Armed Robbery under Section 392 read with Section 397 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 14 years and shall be liable for a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
Commander of Jurong Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Cheang Keng Keong, commended his officers for their resourcefulness and good investigative skills which led to the arrest of the suspect.
