Arrest of Serial Loanshark Runner
 

Police arrested a 40-year-old man on 7 June 2010 for suspected involvement in a series of loanshark harassment cases islandwide.

On 7 June 2010 at about 12.10pm, through extensive ground enquiries and thorough follow-up investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division arrested the suspect in the vicinity of Lorong Buangkok. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be a debtor-turned-runner and involved in multiple cases of loanshark harassment islandwide.

The subject will be charged in Court on 8 June 2010 at 9.00 am for the offence of loanshark harassment. Under the amended Moneylenders Act 2008, first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment may be imprisoned up to 5 years and fined between $5,000/- and $50,000/-. In addition, they are liable to caning not more than 6 strokes.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Hsu Sin Yun commended his officers for their efforts leading to the successful arrest. He further stressed that the Police will not hesitate to deal with such offenders severely.
