Drunk Driver Arrested For Attempting To Bribe Traffic Cop

Police arrested a 61 year-old man last night for suspected drink-driving and attempting to bribe a police officer.

On 16 June 2010 at about 2130 hrs, Sgt So Weng Fai responded to a case of traffic accident involving a car and a motorcycle along Aljunied Road (before Sims Avenue ). Upon reaching the accident scene, Sgt So noted that the motorcyclist was already conveyed to Changi General Hospital and proceeded to interview the driver of the car. Following a breathalyzer test, Sgt So informed the driver that he had failed the test and would be arrested for drink driving. The driver then pleaded with Sgt So to let him off and told Sgt So to contact him in future for a good opportunity in return for the favour. However, Sgt So steadfastly rejected the offer and placed him under arrest for drink driving and attempted bribery.

A subsequent Breath Evidential Analyser test showed that the driver’s breath contained 61 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, significantly exceeding the legally prescribed limit of 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath. Police are investigating the driver for the offence of drink driving while the charge of attempted bribery has been referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) for follow-up action.

Ag Commander of Traffic Police, Superintendent Poh Lye Hin, commended Sgt So Weng Fai for remaining steadfast and true to his calling. He said, “I am extremely proud to see Sgt So Weng Fai living up to our SPF core values and upholding the good name of the SPF.” He also took the opportunity to remind all motorists against drink driving and reiterated that the Traffic Police will not hesitate to take enforcement action against drink drivers.
