Serial MRT Toilet Thief Arrested
 

Police have arrested a 32-year-old man who is believed to be involved in several cases of theft at the male and female toilets of Clementi MRT station.

In these cases which were reported over the period of 4 April to 13 June 2010 , bags and wallets containing cash and other personal items and documents had been stolen when the bags were either placed on the floor of the cubicle or hung on the hook of the cubicle door. Following the reports, officers from Clementi Police Division conducted intensive enquiries and managed to ascertain the identity of a suspect. Officers then conducted numerous ambushes in a bid to apprehend the suspect but he remained elusive. Subsequently on 26 Jun 2010 at 11.30 am , officers from Clementi Police Division finally arrested the suspect at a construction site near Clementi MRT Station. A handphone and pouch containing personal documents, believed to be stolen items, was also recovered from his possession. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be involved in at least six cases of theft.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 28 Jun 2010 for the offence of Theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces imprisonment which may extend to 3 years, or with fine, or with both.

Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Melvin Yong commended his officers for their excellent investigative work and perseverance which led to the successful arrest of the suspect.
