Swift Action by Police - Eight Arrested for Orchard Plaza Murder

Police have arrested 8 male Malay Singaporeans, aged between 17 and 41 years old, in connection with the murder of a 28 year-old Malay man at Orchard Plaza on 23 July 2010. Following intensive investigations by CID officers who worked around the clock, the eight suspects were picked up in a CID-led operation within 27hours. They were arrested at various locations in Singapore, including Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Merah, Sembawang and Marsiling.

On 23 July 2010 at about 4.15am, Police responded to a case of a fight at Orchard Plaza. A Malay man was found injured with slash wounds and subsequently passed away in hospital at 4.58am.

Seven of the suspects will be charged in court on 25 July 2010 at 9am for murder which carries the death penalty. The remaining suspect will be released on bail pending further investigations.

Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Senior Assistant Commissioner Ng Boon Gay said, "I commend my officers who have worked hard to bring the perpetrators to justice in such a short span of time. Such violent behaviour and blatant disregard for the law will not be condoned. We will come down hard on any individuals or groups who take the law into their own hands and see to it that they face the full brunt of the law."
