Public Tip-off Leads To Arrest of Two Loanshark Runners
 

Police have arrested two Chinese men aged 20 and 23 years old for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On 27 July 2010 at about 9.45 pm, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division were alerted by a member of the public that two suspicious men were seen loitering in the vicinity of Yishun Street 22. The said member of the public also provided detailed descriptions of the two subjects to the Police. Acting on the information received, the officers responded swiftly to the scene and spotted two subjects fitting the descriptions given at a carpark in Yishun St 22. On checking, they were found in possession of several handphones and cash amounting to more than $700/-. The two subjects were subsequently placed under arrest for suspected involvement in loansharking activities. Preliminary investigation indicated that the two suspects are believed to have assisted the business of a loanshark by collecting debt repayments from debtors. Police investigations are still on-going.

First time offenders found guilty of assisting in carrying out an unlicensed moneylending business may be fined not less $30,000 and up to $300,000/- with mandatory imprisonment of up to 4 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, DAC Hsu Sin Yun commended the member of the public for his vigilance and his officers for their prompt response which resulted in the successful arrest of the two suspects.
