Police have arrested two men aged 17 and 18 years old for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment following a tip-off from a vigilant resident.
On 5 Aug 2010 at about 11.50 am , Police were alerted by a resident that two suspicious men were seen loitering along the corridor of a block in the vicinity of Admiralty Drive . Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division responded swiftly to the scene but the duo had already left. Undeterred, the officers combed the area and carried out an extensive search. The officers' efforts paid off when they spotted one of the suspects who fitted the description provided by the resident at a multi-storey carpark located at Sembawang Close. Upon further interview, the said suspect was placed under arrest for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment.
Through follow-up investigations, the identity of the other suspect was promptly established. On the same day at about 4.30 pm , he was arrested along Canberra Road . Preliminary investigation revealed that the duo has committed loanshark harassment by splashing paint at a unit in Admiralty Dr ive .
The two suspects will be charged in Court on 7 August 2010 for loanshark harassment. Under the amended Moneylenders Act 2008, first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment may be imprisoned up to 5 years and fined between $5,000/- and $50,000/-. In addition, they are liable to caning not more than 6 strokes.
Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division HQ, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Hsu Sin Yun, commended the resident for his vigilance and his officers for their good work in arresting the two suspects.
