Public Tip-Off Leads To Arrest Of Loanshark Runner

Police have arrested a 42 year-old man for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment, following a tip-off from a member of public yesterday evening.

On 9 August 2010 at about 8.00 pm, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division were alerted by a member of public that a man was seen behaving suspiciously along the corridor of a block at Yishun Street 71. Upon being notified, the officers arrived at the location promptly and spotted the suspect. The suspect fled upon seeing the officers but was detained after a short chase. Following an interview, the suspect was subsequently placed under arrest for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment. A bicycle lock and debtor's note found in his possession were also seized as case exhibits. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is a debtor-turned-runner and had intended to commit loanshark harassment at the said location.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 11 August 2010 for loanshark harassment. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of attempting to commit loanshark harassment may be imprisoned up to 5 years and fined between $5,000/- and $50,000/-. In addition, they are also liable to caning with not more than 6 strokes.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division HQ, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Hsu Sin Yun, commended the member of public for his vigilance and his officers for their good work in arresting the suspect.
