Two Loanshark Harassers Nabbed

Police have arrested two men yesterday for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment.

On 23 Aug 2010 at about 8.50 pm, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division were conducting anti-crime rounds in the vicinity of Hougang Ave 8 when they spotted two men behaving suspiciously at the void deck of Block 450. Upon a check, one of the suspects was found in possession of loanshark- related paraphernalia such as a black marker pen, three packets of orange paint and a slip of paper containing suspected debtors’ addresses. The two suspects were subsequently placed under arrest for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were believed to have carried out acts of harassment by splashing paint at debtors' units in Hougang.

The suspects, aged 21 and 23, will be charged in Court on 25 August 2010 for loanshark harassment under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010). First time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division HQ, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Hsu Sin Yun, commended his officers for their vigilance leading to the arrest of the two suspects.
