Teenage Girls Arrested for Lift Robberies

Police have arrested 2 teenage girls, aged 15 and 17, who are believed to be involved in 2 cases of lift robberies. A 17 year-old teenage boy was also arrested in connection with one of the cases.

On 6 Sept 2010 at about 10.45 pm, a 62 year-old woman reported to the Police that two subjects had tried to rob her while she was inside the lift at Block 21 Hougang Avenue 1. One of the subjects had pushed her out of the lift and tried to snatch away her handbag but she managed to hold on to her handbag and shouted for help. Both subjects fled when their attempt to snatch her handbag failed.

Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division responded swiftly to the scene and managed to detain a 17 year-old female suspect fitting the description provided by the victim within 10 minutes upon arrival. Following her arrest, the officers managed to locate the other suspect, a 15 year old female, about 40 minutes later. Both suspects were brought back for further investigations upon their arrest.

Investigations revealed that the suspects were believed to be responsible for another case of lift robbery on 17 Aug 2010 at Block 123C Rivervale Drive involving a 14 year-old female victim. Through extensive enquiries, it was further established that a 17 year-old male accomplice was also involved in this case. The male accomplice was subsequently arrested in the vicinity of Syed Alwi Road on 7 September at about 3.30 am.

The three suspects will be charged in Court on 8 September 2010 for an offence of Robbery with Hurt which carries a maximum of 20 years imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the cane.
