Two Vietnamese Loanshark Runners Arrested

Police have arrested two Vietnamese men aged 30 and 33 years old for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment.

On 17 September 2010 at about 4.00 pm, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division were conducting anti-crime rounds in the vicinity of Serangoon North Ave 1 when they spotted two men behaving suspiciously at the void deck. Seeing the officers approach them, the duo fled. However, they were detained after a short chase. Upon a check, the two suspects were found in possession of loanshark-paraphernalia such as a bottle of paint and a marker. Both were subsequently placed under arrest for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment.

The suspects will be charged on 18 September for attempted loanshark harassment. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of attempting to commit loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Hsu Sin Yun, commended his officers for their efforts in the fight against loansharks.
