Serial Motorcycle Thief Arrested
 

Police have arrested a 29-year-old man who is believed to be responsible for at least four cases of motorcycle theft in the Hougang area.

Between 10 and 16 September 2010, four motorcycles were reported missing in Hougang. Following the reports, officers from Ang Mo Kio Division studied the crime trend and conducted extensive ambushes in an effort to nab the suspect. On 19 September 2010 at about 6.10 am , the officers spotted the suspect approaching one of the stolen motorcycles. As he was about to start the engine of the stolen motorcycle, the officers moved in and detained him. Upon an interview, the suspect was placed under arrest for suspected theft.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 22 September 2010 . First time offenders found guilty of Theft of Motor Vehicle under Section 379A of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 may be imprisoned for a term which may extend to seven years, and a fine.

Acting Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Superintendent Manimaran Pushpanatan, commended his officers for their good investigative follow-up and efforts leading to the arrest of the suspect. He also advised motorcycle owners to note the following crime prevention measures:

Park your motorcycle in well-lit areas;

- Remove the ignition key and lock the motorcycle whenever it is left unattended, even if it is only for a short while;
- Install an anti-theft alarm; and
- Use additional locking devices on your motorcycles, such as disc brake locks.
