Serial Con Artist Arrested For Equipment Rental Scam

Police have arrested a 43 year-old man who is believed to be involved in several cases of rental scams involving camera and event equipment.

In September 2010, Police received several reports against a man named ‘K Saravanan’ for failing to return cameras and event equipment he had rented. Investigations revealed that between August and September 2010, the suspect had identified himself as an event organiser and approached several shops and individuals to rent camera and event equipment. After paying a small fee for the rental, he would then go missing with the equipment.

Through extensive follow up investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division managed to establish the identity of the suspect. On 27 September 2010 at 2.45 pm, Police mounted an operation and arrested him in the vicinity of York Hill. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have involved in at least 6 cases and had sold off all the rented cameras and equipment.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 29 September 2010 for Criminal Breach of Trust under Section 406 Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces imprisonment of up to 7 years and shall also be liable to fine.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Hsu Sin Yun commended his officers for their good investigative skills leading to the arrest of the suspect. He also advised members of the public who had fallen prey to a similar scam to lodge a police report if they have not done so.
