Chai Chee Lift Robber Arrested

Police have arrested a 45-year-old man who is believed to be involved in 2 cases of lift robbery in the Chai Chee Housing Estate.

On 12 September 2010 , at about 6.30pm , Police were informed that a 91-year-old man had been robbed by a male suspect inside the lift at Blk 39 Chai Chee Avenue. The suspect had confronted the victim in the lift as it was ascending and assaulted him before relieving him of his cash.

In another incident on 23 September 2010, at about 9.45pm , a 65-year-old woman reported that she was robbed of her handbag by a male suspect as she exited from the lift of Blk 31 Chai Chee Avenue.

Investigations revealed that both cases were likely committed by the same suspect. Through extensive follow-up investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division managed to establish the suspect’s identity and immediately mounted several stake-outs at various locations in an effort to apprehend him. The officers' efforts finally paid off on 28 September 2010 at about 10.00 pm when they spotted the suspect in the vicinity of Chai Chee Avenue during one of their stake-outs. The officers moved in at that juncture and the suspect was duly arrested.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 30 September 2010 for an offence of Robbery with Hurt which carries a maximum of 20 years imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the cane.

Commander of Bedok Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Teo Chun Ching, commended his officers for their good investigative work and perseverance which led to the arrest of the suspect.
