A 48 year-old man who allegedly outraged the modesty of a female commuter and assaulted her on board a bus was detained by three public-spirited commuters yesterday morning.
On 23 March 2011 at about 9.00 am, a 26 year-old woman was on board an SBS bus when she was molested by an unknown man standing beside her. When she confronted him, the suspect threw a punch to her face. The commotion attracted the attention of three male commuters, 30 year-old Koh Kah Chong, 38 year-old Sng Teck Leong and 42 year-old Ng Kim Wan, who immediately went to her assistance. Though the suspect put up a violent struggle, the trio was undeterred and managed to subdue him. The Police were then notified and took over custody of the suspect upon arrival.
The suspect will be charged in Court on 25 March 2011. The offence of Outrage of Modesty under Section 354(1) of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 carries an imprisonment for a term which may extend to 2 years, or with fine, or with caning or with any combination of such punishments. The offence of Voluntarily Causing Hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 carries an imprisonment for a term which may extend to 2 years, or with fine which may extend to $5,000, or with both.
Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Hsu Sin Yun, commended the three commuters for their public-spiritedness and thanked them for their assistance in detaining the suspect.
