Police have arrested a 41-year-old man who is believed to be involved in at least 5 cases of rental scams committed at Rivervale Drive, Indus Road and Tampines after he surrendered himself to Police following a Police media appeal for information.
On 26 July 2011 at about 1.30 pm, Police issued an appeal for information through the media, seeking the whereabouts of Dennis Ang Beng Kiat to assist with investigations into at least 3 cases of flat rental scams reported at Blk 123 Rivervale Drive. In all these cases, the victims responded to flat rental advertisements placed in the newspapers. The suspect, who was the owner of the flat, arranged with the victims to view the unit and thereafter collected deposits and rental advances for the unit. After collecting the money, the suspect became evasive and remained uncontactable.
Following prominent media coverage revealing the photo of Dennis Ang and the deeds committed, the suspect was believed to have been persuaded by a friend and those he knew who saw the appeal to give himself up. On 28 July 2011, the suspect surrendered himself at Ang Mo Kio Police Division and was placed under arrest. Preliminary investigations indicate that besides the 3 cases committed at Rivervale Drive, the suspect is believed to be responsible for two other rental scam cases at Indus Road and Tampines whereby he similarly collected deposits and rental advances, and subsequently became evasive after signing fictitious rental agreements.
The suspect will be charged in Court on 30 July 2011 for the offence of Cheating which carries a punishment of imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years and a fine.
Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Hsu Sin Yun, expressed his appreciation to the media for their invaluable assistance which resulted in the quick arrest of the suspect.
