Traffic Police Department
KEY HIGHLIGHTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS IN FY 2006
Key Operational Achievements
GE 2006
In addition to providing police presence along the entry and exit routes before and after the rallies to ensure law and order on the roads, TP also provided traffic management support and advice to the Division Commanders and OC troops on injury and
dispersal plans.
IMF-WB Board of Governors Annual Meetings 2006 or S2006
Leaving nothing to chance, TP collaborated with the organisers and external agencies to establish Standard Operating Procedures and implement robust traffic diversion and management schemes, as well as logistical and contingency plans to ensure the smooth entry and exit of delegates, VVIP and emergency vehicles at the areas of operations. TP also embarked on a comprehensive communications plan, which included the active engagement of various stakeholders, distribution of informative pamphlets, placing of advertisements in magazines, and the installation of numerous road signs in the vicinity of Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Centre. Timely traffic information was also disseminated through radio and TV stations.
Throughout the 11-day operation, TP officers, aided by a sizeable number of seconded officers, worked tirelessly, 24 hours a day, to manage traffic, escort VVIPs and support the Public Order Task Force.
State Visit by President of the United States
During the state visit by United States President George Bush, road closures were meticulously planned, coordinated, staggered and executed, to ensure minimum disruption to the other motorists. For the first time, TP also undertook the command and control of all journeys and movements on the roads taken for the state visit.

Key Development Achievements
Working with Liquor Establishments to Curb Drink Driving
TP and the Police Licensing Division implemented a new scheme that requires selected classes of liquor licence holders to display anti-drink drive posters in their licensed premises from 1 July 2006. All classes of liquor licence holders will be included in the scheme come December 2007.
Upgrading the Traffic Police Information Centre (TPIC)
The existing call centre to the Traffic Police Information Centre (TPIC) was upgraded with the Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS). Callers can now check their demerit points and obtain other useful traffic-related information via several automated self-service features. The new TPIC was officially launched by the Commissioner of Police on 21 April 2006.
Involving the Community in Anti-Drink Drive Campaign and Road Safety Outreach Programme
TP has worked with community partners, for example, entertainment outlets, to render personalised services such as arranging for taxis or car jockeys to send their drunken patrons home. Pageant winners were also engaged to give road safety talks and exhibitions at tertiary institutions. At the Road Safety Outreach 2006, under the ‘Road Safety Education for Motorcyclists by Motorcyclists’ programme, seasoned motoring
enthusiasts in motorcycle clubs were roped in to give talks to tertiary and ITE students.
PLANS FOR FY 2007
FY 2007 promises to be an even more challenging year for TP, with the holding of the National Day Parade at the Esplanade Park for the first time, the Global Road Safety Week – the first United Nations (UN) initiative to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities throughout the world, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit 2007. For technological developments, TP will be implementing the use of Tablet PCs to enhance the efficiency and capability of the driving testing system.
