Foreword of Commander Traffic Police
The vehicle population in Singapore has increased significantly over the years, not unexpected as Singapore is becoming more affluent. Nevertheless, despite a 15% rise in overall vehicle population over the past 10 years, the fatality rate per 10,000 vehicle population has seen a significant drop compared to 10 years ago, from 3.64 in 1997 to 2.34 in 2006.
While traffic fatality rate has declined over the years, we should not be resting on our laurels. Motorcyclists and pillion riders continue to be the key concern. They are the most vulnerable group of road users. They comprised 55% of the 173 total road accident fatalities recorded in Year 2005, and 54% of the 190 total road accident fatalities in Year 2006.
With the expected continuous increases in both human and vehicle populations in Singapore , it is crucial that our road users exercise greater care, caution and consideration at all times. Road traffic mishaps can often be avoided as most of them are the result of human error, carelessness, negligence and even inconsiderate acts of individuals.
Road safety is a journey that requires continuous effort from everyone, and not just the enforcement agencies and the road engineering departments. Therefore, we have been relentless in our efforts to engage the community to inculcate the sense of self-responsibility on the roads. This can often make the difference between life and death. While Traffic Police will continue with our efforts in the areas of legislation, enforcement and education, the safety on our roads will ultimately depend on the safety mindset of each and every road user.
This Annual Statistics Report is meant to be shared with our partners and the community, who are the key stakeholders of public road safety. We shall continue to build on this partnership to further improve the road traffic situation in Singapore.
