Annual TP 2010 2009 2008 2007 2006

Foreword of Commander Traffic Police

2008 was an exciting year for the Traffic Police (TP). Apart from fulfilling our core mission of maintaining law and order on the roads and promoting road traffic safety, TP also worked closely with the organiser and various external agencies in ensuring the success of the inaugural Formula One (F1) night race in Singapore through robust traffic diversion and management schemes.

Our roads are likely to get busier with the expected increase in the vehicle and human population, as well as an upswing in economic activities. Despite a 6% increase in the vehicle population from 2007 to 2008, the fatality rate per 10,000 vehicle population has dropped from 2.6 in 2007 to 2.5 in 2008. Among road users, motorcyclists and their pillion riders continue to be a key concern as they remain the most vulnerable group. They comprised 49% (108) of the 221 total road accident fatalities recorded in Year 2008.

Therefore, it is important that motorists do their part by watching out for vulnerable groups like motorcyclists, as well as pedestrians and pedal cyclists. In addition, the public should also adopt a mindset of zero-tolerance towards irresponsible behaviours on our roads. Ensuring that our roads are safe requires continuous effort from everyone – not just the authorities. While TP will continue with our efforts in the areas of enforcement and education, road safety is ultimately dependent on the safety mindset and continuous effort of every road user.

In the year ahead, TP will continue to work closely with key stakeholders to improve the road traffic situation in Singapore. Together, we can make travelling on our roads a safer experience for all.
