'A' Division Officers Save a Young Life
By SSgt Raymond Singh, Assistant Planning Officer, 'A' Division

On 28 January 2005, Divisional Armoury Officer, SSgt Mike Ng and staff assistants to Head Support and Technical, SC Mohd Syahmeer and SC Tan Yan Chong of 'A' Division were at Loyang Aloha Resort to survey the location for their unit retreat.

At about 4.50 pm , as they were walking in the vicinity of the poolside bungalows, they heard a cry for help coming from the direction of the swimming pool. They rushed immediately to render assistance. When they arrived, they saw a Malay man looking distressed, standing over an unconscious boy lying at the side of the pool. The boy had a bloated stomach and his face was starting to turn blue. The three officers went over to the man, who identified himself as the boy's uncle, and were informed that he had found the boy unconscious in the swimming pool.

SC Mohd Syahmeer immediately began performing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) in a bid to revive the boy. At the same time, SSgt Mike Ng and SC Tan Yan Chong summoned an ambulance and performed crowd control as people were starting to gather around the area.

Fortunately, SC Mohd Syahmeer administered the CPR expertly and after a few short but tense minutes, the boy became conscious and vomited the swallowed water. Shortly after, an ambulance arrived and the paramedics took over the first aid and conveyed the stricken boy to hospital.

The boy's uncle and aunt informed the officers that the family were staying in a chalet nearby. Shortly before the incident, the boy, Nasif Hadi Bin Hairullah, had sneaked out of the chalet without their knowledge and had gone swimming in the pool unsupervised. At about 4.45 pm , the family discovered the boy was missing and went to search for him.

The boy's uncle found him floating unconscious in the swimming pool. He then shouted for help and immediately went into the pool and pulled the boy out. It was then that he saw the three officers coming over to help. The family thanked the officers profusely.

The following day, the three officers went to Kandang Kerbau Hospital to visit the boy. They found him feeling much better and recovering well. His relatives were also there and they thanked the officers again for the timely rescue.

Luckily for the boy, the three civic-minded officers had been in the vicinity when help was desperately needed. They had reacted calmly and had followed the correct procedures in response to the emergency. Because of their timely actions, they were able to save a life, sparing a family from definite sorrow.

Good work, officers!
