Moved by their selfless service, a grateful member of public wrote on behalf of two foreign friends to thank Sgt Kelvin Ho and Sgt Rasheed (in right and left position respectively in the picture below) from Changi Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC).
On 18 July 2004 at about 11.30pm, the two officers, on scooter patrol, saw the couple park their van at a sandy construction area at Changi Business Park and advised them not to stay too long in the area as the location was isolated. Heeding the advice, the driver started to move away. Unfortunately, the van's wheels had become stuck in the sand.
Despite several attempts, all efforts proved futile. Yet, the officers persisted even though the van occupants appeared to have given up on the task. They failed to move the van in the end, but their spirit and persistence were commendable. The two officers even apologised for their failure and provided tow service numbers to the couple.
As it was late at night and it was also an isolated area, the officers assured the couple that they would continue to patrol the area and gave them the number of Changi NPC for easy contact in case the need arose. The couple noticed that the officers had dirtied their uniforms and one of them had even suffered some cuts on the hand, but they had remained very helpful and had displayed resourcefulness and professionalism throughout the incident. The couple also noted that the two officers returned to the area at least two to three times during their wait for the tow service.
In the appreciation letter, the writer quoted the couple, "We are lucky to have witnessed two professional Singapore Police Officers, who dealt with the situation so differently from officers in many other countries." The selfless acts of the officers have made the couple "feel very safe and confident when in Singapore " and the writer to "feel very proud of the Singapore Police Force". Truly, these two officers epitomised the sums of service - selfless service is simply service.
