Crime Prevention Advisory for Bicycle Owners5

  1. Do not leave the bicycle along the common corridor or staircase / lift landing. Keep the bicycle at home if not in use;
  2. When outside, the bicycle should always be locked when left unattended, even if it is for a short while;
  3. Lock the bicycle to a fixed permanent structure e.g. on a bicycle rack that is anchored to the ground or wall. Always secure the bicycle components and accessories, especially those which are easily removable;
  4. Invest in a durable lock made from 100% hardened steel that is pick-resistant. As an added enhancement, one can secure the bicycle with a U-lock, which provides better security compared to cable locks. A reasonably good lock can be purchased for $40 onwards;

  5. Park the bicycle at places which are well-lit and where human traffic is heavy or frequent; and
  6. Make permanent identification marks on the bicycle e.g. engrave your name on the bicycle frame, as well as to keep records of the bicycle, such as the purchase receipt or photos of the bicycle. This will enable Police to facilitate recovery of the bicycle if it is stolen.
